Great Leaders Display These Characteristics

A great leader is developed over time – and usually with the help of another great leader. Leadership is the ability to perform at a very high level and to motivate others to do the same by creating an atmosphere of inclusion and engagement which enables others to perform and to grow into successful leaders.  While there are many characteristics of great leaders, the characteristics below are at the top of the list:

Listen to hear:  Great leaders listen to hear and not to react.  They display a true interest in what others have to say; they listen closely to words that are spoken; they see body language, and they allow others to speak and digest their diverse perspectives.

Possess excellent communication skills: Great leaders are open communicators and encourage open communication among their teams.  They have no fear of differing opinions and display professionalism and respectful communication.

Display honesty and transparency:  Great leaders display honesty and transparency in an effort to build relationships of trust and respect.

Admit mistakes: Great leaders admit if they make a wrong decision, but they also learn from that decision and use it as an opportunity for growth and as an example to grow others.

Empower others to lead:  Great leaders are not threatened by the strength of an aspiring leader.  They offer opportunities to others to grow and learn.

Encourage teamwork:  Great leaders encourage teamwork.  Although independent work may be required on a project team, great leaders encourage teams to interact and engage to gather diverse perspectives.

Congratulate the team:  Great leaders congratulate their team for a job well done and do not need to be congratulated themselves.  They give credit where credit is due, and they are confident enough in their own ability to lead that they do not need accolades.

Leadership is a constant work in progress.  While some may possess leadership characteristics, true leadership is a learned skill.
