Black History Month

Black History Month is a month-long celebration recognizing the contributions of Black people in the United Sates.  It evolved from “Negro History Week,” which Carter G. Woodson started in 1926.  In 1976, Negro History Week became Black History Month when Gerald Ford extended the recognition of black people throughout the nation for their overlooked accomplishments.

Black History Month should be embraced by ALL.  Why?

  • To commemorate the past

  • To celebrate our differences with enthusiasm

  • To learn about history

  • To continue the fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • To remind us that disparity still exists and that there is a need to continue to advocate for justice for all people.

We should all embrace the opportunity for education and celebration during Black History Month. Our families, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances have the opportunity to continue to advocate for change, but most importantly, our children deserve to understand black history so that they are able to continue to educate others and advocate for change in the future.
