Mental Health Awareness Month

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month which has been observed in the U.S. since 1949.  However, It is clear that employees need assistance from their organizations to remain physically and mentally healthy. In a New York Times article published on April 11, 2023, author Joe Gose says, “The pandemic and its lockdowns accelerated a mental health crisis in the United States, leaving treatment providers racing to keep up with the growing demand for care.”

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in the U.S. since 1949.  While some people find it difficult to discuss mental health openly, it is critical for all employees to be physically and mentally healthy to perform at 100% for their organization.  As stated by the CDC, “Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we manage stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.” (About Mental Health (cdc.gov))  That means if employees are not mentally healthy, they most likely will not be able to give 100% to their employer.

Employers should prioritize mental health and well-being, and below are several ways to accomplish that goal:

·       Provide mental health and well-being training to all employees.

·       Provide manager training on how to identify mental health issues on their teams.

·       Offer mental health benefits to employees – and promote them.

·       Develop an inclusive mental and physical wellness program and encourage all employees to participate in the program.

Employers - Get on board.
